Training and consultancy

Talking Money provides a training and consultancy service in Bristol and the South West and also co-ordinate training on behalf of ACFA.

Training is available on a range of issues for front-line workers in information and advice agencies.

ACFA Training

ACFA, a network of information & advice agencies in the South West region, provides training on a range of issues, and Talking Money is proud to co-ordinate this service. One day courses providing an introduction to welfare rights; debt; financial capability; and energy advice are regularly scheduled, and training on a range of other subjects of interest to people working in information & advice agencies are offered. Talking Money Training

Talking Money has over 26 years experience of money advice work and our staff have extensive experience in the areas of debt, energy advice, welfare rights and financial capability. We are able to offer in-house training for organisations in the south west region for between 10 and 18 people at £700 + VAT (£350 + VAT for ½ day training). Introduction to Financial Capability
This one day course is designed to give you the tools and information you need to assist clients on a range of financial capability issues as well as changes to the benefits system. Topics covered include financial exclusion; budgeting; common banking problems; types of lenders; and helping clients prepare for, and mitigate, changes to benefit system.

Introduction to Debt
This one day course is designed to give you the tools and information you need to assist clients who are facing problems with debt and enable you to identify when to refer to a specialist. Topics covered include causes and effects of debt; money advice process; prioritising debts; creditors’ enforcement options; financial statements; debt solutions; and dealing with enforcement agents.

Introduction to Benefits
This one day course is designed to give you the tools and information you need to assist clients with generalist level advice and support on welfare benefits. Topics covered include a general overview of the different types of benefits; changes to state pensions; analysing a Personal Independence Payment application; and recent and upcoming changes to the benefit system, including how to complete Universal Credit calculations.

Introduction to Energy
This one day course is designed to provide you with an understanding of fuel poverty and provide information on practical ways to help clients reduce the risk of falling into fuel debt. Topics covered include causes of fuel debt; understanding energy consumption; managing bills; sources of help and support for people in fuel debt and vulnerable people; comparing tariffs; and energy efficiency.

Completing Financial Statements
This half day course is designed to provide you with tools and information to complete successful financial statements for a variety of purposes. It follows a client scenario and uses group discussion and practical exercises completing financial statements.

Writing Discretionary Applications
This half day course, delivered through practical exercises on computers, is designed to help you write successful discretionary applications. Topics covered include Discretionary Housing Applications; Local Authority Welfare Grant Applications; as well as charitable grant applications.

Getting On-line
This half day course is designed to provide you with tools to help clients to use computers and the internet. It is delivered through practical exercises on computers and with some role play. Topics covered include the barriers people face to getting on-line; exercises on communication and jargon spotting; and using useful websites.

Talking Money Consultancy

Talking Money provides a supervision and consultancy service for agencies with staff providing debt advice. An experienced member of our team is able to provide external supervision for debt advisers and a debt advice consultancy service for local agencies. Dan joined Talking Money from East Bristol Advice Service in 2009, as a debt adviser. Dan is an experienced specialist money adviser and has been delivering training and group workshops for the last two years. He took on the role of Senior Financial Inclusion Officer in 2015, and in June 2016 began a maternity cover position as Talking Money’s Projects and Partnerships Manager, with responsibility for managing our key partnership project: Money Advice West. Dan holds a specialist qualification, the Certificate in Money Advice Practice, from the University of Staffordshire. He is an accredited member of the ‘Institute of Money Advisers’ and he is a City & Guilds qualified trainer.

A member of our team since 2014, Nick has a thorough knowledge of welfare rights, and a track record of securing positive outcomes for his clients. He has extensive experience in applying for discretionary grants and payments from a wide range of public and charitable bodies.

Michelle is a qualified solicitor (non-practising) who has worked in the Financial Inclusion team at Talking Money since 2013. Michelle offers specialist financial inclusion advice, supporting clients with money management and welfare grants issues both one-to-one and through group workshops.

Michelle joined the Financial Inclusion team at Talking Money in 2015 from a Work Programme background. She delivers specialist financial capability, money management and welfare benefits advice to a wide range of clients, one to one and through group workshops.

Cheryl Swift
Senior Money Advice Caseworker

Cheryl has delivered specialist debt advice with Talking Money since 2005 and so has a wealth of experience and expertise in all aspects of debt advice. Currently supporting a team of six specialist debt advice workers, as well as volunteers, Cheryl provides external supervision for debt advisers working for local organisations and consultancy for other agencies. She has carried out file reviews, peer reviews and consultancy for several years.
